Indian Navy convinced govt to join Operation Atalanta : British MP

The Indian government was reluctant to get involved with Operation Atalanta revealed UK Liberal MEP Graham Watson. He was speaking to speaking to EurActiv. Graham was commenting on how India is changing the way it looks at European Union. EU was very concerned that the Atalanta naval force stationed in Djibouti, for counter piracy in Somalia, found that the pirates were attacking ships farther and farther from the Somali coast. Some hijackings were 1,300 nautical miles away from Somalia and on the other side of the Indian Ocean.

Graham said “The Indian government was reluctant to get involved with Operation Atalanta. Yet as a result of discussions between EU and Indian naval commanders, the Indian Navy decided to help and the Indian government accepted the EU argument for their involvement.”

Graham also said that the EU and India were finding in areas of fighting crime. “The Indians are very keen to work with us,” he added.
